Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment in which you breathe 100% oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. The increased pressure allows more oxygen to dissolve into your bloodstream and reach tissues that are swollen, infected, or poorly perfused, supporting the body’s natural healing processes.

How HBOT Helps

Common Clinical Uses (as medically appropriate)

Common Clinical Uses (as medically appropriate)

 • Increases oxygen delivery to injured tissue
• Reduces swelling and inflammation
• Supports new blood vessel growth (angiogenesis)
• Enhances white blood cell function to fight infection
• Promotes collagen formation and wound closure

Common Clinical Uses (as medically appropriate)

• Diabetic foot ulcers and other non-healing wounds
• Radiation tissue injury (e.g., soft-tissue radionecrosis, osteoradionecrosis)
• Compromised skin grafts and flaps
• Chronic, refractory osteomyelitis (bone infection)
• Crush injury and acute traumatic ischemias
• Certain post-surgical or infected wounds that are slow to heal

What to Expect During Treatment

What to Expect During Treatment

What to Expect During Treatment

• You lie comfortably in a clear, pressurized chamber while breathing 100% oxygen
• Typical sessions last 90–120 minutes; the number of sessions varies based on your diagnosis and response to care
• You can rest, listen to music, or watch TV during treatment
• A trained clinician monitors you throughout each session

 • You may feel ear pressure similar to airplane ascent/descent; staff will teach you how to equalize your ears

Who May Be a Candidate

Candidates are determined after a clinical evaluation of your wound, circulation, infection status, and overall health. HBOT is used when the potential benefits outweigh the risks and when it is expected to improve healing as part of a complete care plan.

How HBOT Fits Into Your Wound Plan

HBOT is one part of comprehensive wound care. Your plan may also include debridement, advanced dressings, infection management, edema/lymphedema control, off-loading, nutrition guidance, and coordination with vascular, podiatry, endocrinology, and primary-care teams.

Preparation Tips

• Bring an updated medication list and allergy information
• Wear cotton clothing without skin lotions, perfumes, or petroleum products on treatment days
• Follow eating and hydration instructions provided by your care team
• Tell us about any recent changes to your health, medications, or mobility
